Spaying and Neutering: What Pet Parents Should Know
Spaying (for females) and neutering (for males) are routine operations that prevent unplanned litters and offer real health benefits. Here are the facts to help you decide.
Health and behaviour benefits
Prevents pregnancy and heat cycles in females
Removes the risk of life-threatening womb infection (pyometra) in females
Reduces the risk of some cancers
Can reduce roaming, marking and fighting in males
Helps control the number of stray animals
When to do it
The best age depends on your pet's species, breed and size. Many cats and small dogs are sterilised at around 5 to 6 months, while some large breeds benefit from waiting longer. Your vet will advise the right timing for your pet.
Recovery
Most pets go home the same day and recover within 10 to 14 days. Keep them calm, use the cone to protect the stitches, and follow the after-surgery advice in our care sheet on caring for your pet after surgery.
