Care Sheet: Wound Care and Living with a Cone

1 min read

The cone (or recovery collar) can look a little sad, but it's one of the most important parts of healing. Licking and chewing are the most common reasons wounds open or get infected.

Checking the wound

  • Look at the wound twice a day in good light.

  • A little redness and slight swelling along the edges is normal for the first few days.

  • Keep the area clean and dry. Don't put creams, oils or powders on it unless we prescribe them.

  • Take a quick photo each day. It helps you notice changes, and you can send it to us on WhatsApp if you're unsure.

Helping your pet with the cone

  • Raise food and water bowls slightly so your pet can eat and drink comfortably.

  • Clear a path through furniture so they don't bump into things.

  • Keep the cone on at night and whenever you can't watch your pet.

  • Make sure you can slide two fingers under the collar: snug, but not tight.

  • Ask us about soft cones or recovery suits if your pet really struggles.

Call us if

  • The wound is bleeding, oozing or smells bad

  • It looks more swollen or red each day instead of less

  • Stitches are missing or the wound has opened

  • Your pet has managed to lick or chew the wound

Every pet is different, so always follow the specific instructions your vet gives you. If anything worries you, big or small, message us on WhatsApp at +91 81690 67671. We're always happy to help.
