Care Sheet: Your Pet's Recovery, Day by Day
Bringing your pet home after surgery is a big relief. Here's what recovery usually looks like, so you know what's normal and when to call us.
The first evening
Your pet may be sleepy, wobbly or a little quiet. This is normal after anaesthesia.
Keep them warm, calm and indoors, away from stairs and other pets.
Offer a small amount of water, then a small, light meal if your vet says it's okay.
Don't worry if they don't eat much tonight. Appetite usually returns by the next day.
Days 2 to 3
Your pet should be brighter and eating normally.
Give pain relief and other medicines exactly as prescribed.
Check the wound morning and evening.
Keep the cone on, especially at night and when you're not watching.
Days 4 to 10
Your pet may feel completely normal, but the inside is still healing.
Keep exercise gentle: short lead walks only, no running, jumping or rough play.
No baths or swimming.
Days 10 to 14
Come in for your stitch check or removal appointment.
Once we give the all-clear, your pet can slowly return to normal activity.
Please call us if you notice
Bleeding, swelling, discharge or a bad smell from the wound
Stitches that have come open
Vomiting, or not eating for more than a day
Pale gums, heavy breathing or extreme tiredness
Signs of pain such as crying, shaking or hiding
Every pet is different, so always follow the specific instructions your vet gives you. If anything worries you, big or small, message us on WhatsApp at +91 81690 67671. We're always happy to help.
