Puppy and Kitten Vaccinations: A Simple Guide for New Pet Parents

Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is exciting. One of the most important things you can do in the first few months is complete their vaccinations, which protect them from serious and sometimes fatal diseases.

Why vaccines matter

Young animals have weak immune systems. Vaccines prepare their bodies to fight infections such as parvovirus, distemper and rabies in dogs, and panleukopenia, cat flu and rabies in cats. Rabies vaccination also protects your family.

When to start

Most puppies and kittens begin vaccinations at around 6 to 8 weeks of age, with boosters every few weeks until they are about 16 weeks old, followed by regular boosters through adult life. Your vet will make a schedule based on your pet's age, health and lifestyle.

What to bring to the first visit

  • Any vaccination or deworming records from the breeder or shelter

  • Notes on what your pet is eating and how often

  • Questions about toilet training, diet or behaviour

Tips for the first few weeks

  • Avoid parks and contact with unknown dogs or cats until your vet says the vaccine course is complete.

  • Keep up with deworming as advised.

  • Mild tiredness or a small lump at the injection site is common for a day or two. Call us if your pet vomits, has facial swelling or seems very unwell.

Not sure what your pet has already had? Bring their records and we will plan the rest of the schedule with you.
