Pet Dental Care: Why Your Dog's and Cat's Teeth Matter
Dental disease is one of the most common problems we see in adult dogs and cats. Plaque hardens into tartar, which irritates the gums and can lead to pain, tooth loss and infection that affects the whole body.
Signs of dental problems
Bad breath
Yellow or brown buildup on the teeth
Red, swollen or bleeding gums
Dropping food or chewing on one side
Pawing at the mouth or reluctance to eat
Daily care at home
Brush your pet's teeth with a pet toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste.
Start slowly: a finger brush and a few seconds a day is a good beginning.
Dental chews and toys can help, but they do not replace brushing.
Avoid very hard chews such as bones or antlers, which can crack teeth.
Professional cleaning
Once tartar has formed, brushing cannot remove it. A vet cleans the teeth safely under anaesthesia, checks for loose or painful teeth, and polishes the surface. We recommend a dental check at every yearly visit.
