Does Your Pet Need an X-ray or Ultrasound? What Every Pet Parent Should Know

1 min read

Pets cannot tell us where it hurts. That is why diagnostic imaging is one of the most useful tools in veterinary care. At Blue Cross Vets Clinic in Kharghar, we offer both X-ray and ultrasound under one roof, so you do not have to travel elsewhere for tests.

What an X-ray shows

X-rays are best for looking at bones, joints, the chest and swallowed objects. Your vet may recommend one if your pet:

  • Is limping or has had a fall or accident

  • May have swallowed a toy, bone or other object

  • Has a persistent cough or difficulty breathing

  • Needs a check of the heart size or lungs

What an ultrasound shows

Ultrasound uses sound waves to show soft organs in real time, such as the liver, kidneys, bladder, intestines and uterus. It is painless and usually needs no sedation. It is commonly used to:

  • Confirm and monitor pregnancy

  • Investigate vomiting, diarrhoea or a swollen belly

  • Look for bladder stones or urinary problems

  • Check organs before surgery or in older pets

How to prepare your pet

For an abdominal ultrasound, your vet may ask you to withhold food for a few hours beforehand so the organs are easier to see. Bring any previous reports and a list of medicines your pet takes.
