Diwali Safety for Pets: Firecrackers, Sweets and Stress
Diwali is a joyful time for families, but loud firecrackers, smoke and festive food can be frightening and even dangerous for pets. A little planning keeps the celebrations happy for everyone at home.
Create a safe, quiet space
Pets hear sounds far more sharply than we do. Before the fireworks start, set up a quiet room with closed windows and curtains, your pet's bed, water and a familiar toy. Soft music or a fan can help mask the noise.
Walk your dog early in the evening, before the crackers begin.
Keep a collar with an ID tag on at all times. Frightened pets often bolt through open doors.
Stay calm yourself. Comfort your pet gently, but do not force them out of a hiding place.
Keep sweets and decorations out of reach
Mithai, chocolate, dry fruits and fried snacks can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and pancreatitis. Raisins and chocolate can be toxic. Keep diyas, candles and rangoli colours away from curious paws and tails.
Talk to us about anxiety
If your pet shakes, pants, hides or stops eating every Diwali, speak to a vet a week or two before the festival. There are safe ways to help anxious pets cope.
Signs you should see a vet
Seek help if your pet has eaten sweets or chocolate, has burns, is vomiting, or is breathing hard for a long time after the noise stops.
