Common Indian Foods That Are Dangerous for Dogs and Cats

It is tempting to share a bite of what we are eating, but several foods common in Indian homes can make dogs and cats very ill. Here are the ones to avoid.

Foods to keep away from pets

  • Onion and garlic: in curries, gravies and snacks. They can damage red blood cells in dogs and cats.

  • Chocolate and cocoa sweets: toxic to dogs, especially dark chocolate.

  • Grapes and raisins: including in kheer and dry fruit mixes. They can cause kidney failure in dogs.

  • Spicy and oily food: such as fried snacks and masala dishes. They can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and pancreatitis.

  • Cooked bones: from chicken or mutton. They can splinter and injure the mouth, throat or gut.

  • Xylitol: a sweetener in some sugar-free gum, sweets and toothpaste. It is very dangerous for dogs.

  • Milk and dairy in large amounts: many adult dogs and cats cannot digest it well.

What to do if your pet eats something harmful

Do not try to make your pet vomit at home unless a vet tells you to. Note what was eaten, how much and when, and contact a vet straight away. Fast action can prevent serious harm.

Safe treats

Small pieces of plain boiled chicken, carrot, cucumber or apple without seeds are usually safe for dogs in moderation. Ask us before changing your pet's diet.
