Caring for Senior Pets: Keeping Older Dogs and Cats Comfortable

Oct 6
1 min read

Dogs and cats are usually considered senior from around 7 years of age, earlier for large dog breeds. Older pets can stay happy and active for years with a few adjustments.

Book check-ups every 6 months

Pets age faster than people, so problems can develop quickly. Regular check-ups and blood tests help us catch kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid problems and arthritis early, when they are easier to manage.

Signs to watch for

  • Drinking or urinating more than usual

  • Weight loss or gain

  • Stiffness, limping or trouble with stairs

  • Lumps or bumps

  • Confusion, restlessness at night or changes in behaviour

Simple ways to help at home

  • Switch to a senior diet if your vet recommends it

  • Keep walks shorter but regular to protect the joints

  • Add rugs on slippery floors and a soft, warm bed

  • Keep your pet at a healthy weight to ease pressure on the joints
