1 min read

Some symptoms mean your pet needs a vet straight away. If you see any of the following, contact a vet immediately.

Go to a vet now if your pet has

  • Difficulty breathing, or blue or very pale gums

  • Collapse, seizures or sudden weakness

  • A swollen, hard belly with retching but nothing coming up (especially in large dogs)

  • Heavy bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure

  • Swallowed poison, medicine, chocolate or a foreign object

  • Been hit by a vehicle or had a fall, even if they seem fine

  • Straining to pass urine with little or nothing coming out (especially male cats)

  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, especially with blood

  • Signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, wobbliness

While you get help

  • Stay calm and keep your pet as still and quiet as possible.

  • Do not give human medicines. Many are toxic to pets.

  • Bring any packaging of what your pet may have eaten.

  • Call ahead so the team can prepare.
