Care Sheet: Caring for Your Pet After Surgery
Good home care after surgery helps your pet heal quickly and comfortably. Always follow the specific instructions your vet gives you; these are general guidelines.
The first 24 hours
Keep your pet in a warm, quiet room. Some drowsiness is normal after anaesthesia.
Offer a small amount of water and a light meal when your vet says it is okay.
Keep children and other pets away so your pet can rest.
Caring for the wound
Check the wound twice a day. A little redness is normal.
Use the cone or recovery suit to stop licking or chewing.
Keep the wound clean and dry. No baths until your vet says so.
Activity
Limit running, jumping and stairs for the period your vet advises.
Take dogs out on a lead for short toilet walks only.
Call us if you notice
Swelling, discharge, bleeding or a bad smell from the wound
Stitches that have come open
Not eating for more than a day, vomiting, or unusual tiredness
Signs of pain such as crying, restlessness or hiding
Give medicines exactly as prescribed and come back for your follow-up check.
